Research bears this out, showing that food can lead to weight gain. The same research has come up with a couple of steps you need to take to eliminate the foods that you think you are allergic to and to rebalance the ecosystem in your gut.
Look at this study: (published in December 2007)
Two groups of children, one group underweight, and the other group at the normal weight were researched.
The researchers looked at factors connected to inflammation. To do that, they looked at the CRP levels which are the C-reactive protein, a marker to show the level of inflammation in the body.
Then they checked out thickening or plaque in the carotid arteries. These are the main arteries that supply the brain.
And finally, they looked at the blood tests for lgG. This is the sign for delayed food allergies. They found out that the overweight children had a 3-fold higher level of CRP, a 2½ fold higher level of IgG antibodies to foods.
The overweight children also had much thicker carotid arteries, showing early signs of atherosclerosis and heart disease. The studies suggested that foods allergies were the cause of obesity and inflammation and not a consequence of obesity and inflammation.
You need to get rid of inflammation
Damage to the gut can lead to a leaky gut, which allows food particles to be exposed in the gut’s immune system. This triggers off an immune response, which leads to inflammation in the body, producing obesity and increasing insulin resistance.
We know that inflammation, no matter the cause, whether it is from food, high fat, high sugar; will produce insulin resistance. This leads to higher insulin levels. Since insulin is a fat storage hormone, you are going to store more fat—and it will be mostly around your belly.
The author of the above study with the two groups of children says that we need to consider eliminating IgG food allergens in order to treat obesity and to prevent heart disease. This means not necessarily limiting calories, but eliminating the foods that cause the allergies - which in turn causes the inflammation.
High-fat diets change the bacterial flora in our gut. The toxin-producing bugs get promoted by our high-fat diets, while the anti-inflammatory and protective bugs die off. (Bet you didn’t know that there are over 500 species of bugs in your gut all fighting for the right to be there!)
Our highly processed foods, high-sugar
This leads to breakdown, inflammation and of course, leaky gut. The toxins all latch onto the immune cells, stimulating them to produce a barrage of inflammation, which all blocks the metabolism, producing insulin resistance, obesity
To put it all simply – when you eat a bad diet, bad bugs will flourish and your whole gut ecosystem will be upset. Actually, by eating a bad diet, you allow bad bugs to flourish.
What results is obesity, diabetes, heart disease
The researchers say that when you add soluble fiber to your diet, you can increase the good bug population and decrease the bad bugs which will lead to weight loss.
The bugs in your gut control your fat storage too, and also the calories you absorb. So if you have healthy bugs in your gut, you lose weight. If you have bad bug, you gain weight.
When you eat a typical American diet, you straight away foster the growth of bad bugs in your gut. They damage your gut lining and produce toxins which get absorbed into your system.
We know that an unhealthy gut makes us fat and sick because it makes us toxic and inflamed.
Try these simple things if you are struggling to feel better and lose weight
- Try out an elimination diet for at least 3 weeks. Cut out what are the most common food allergens. These will be gluten, dairy, eggs, yeast, corn, and peanuts.
- Some people find they are sensitive to soy, so cut that out too.
- Start eating whole-foods, high fiber, and a plant-based type of diet. This is essential to feed the good bugs in your gut. It will provide the nutrients needed to function optimally.
- Take probiotics on a daily basis to boost the healthy bacteria in your gut. Look for those that contain Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species. Make sure you select from reputable brands.
And then watch and wait and see that within a few short weeks, you will see a huge difference that will have come from staving off inflammation because your gut will be healed.
